The story behind My Lunch Buddy

 In May 2026, our 9 year-old daughter, Charlotte, was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes after going into DKA. 

That week marked the beginning of a whole new way of life for our family.

When it came to getting back into everyday routines, something as familiar as packing a school lunch became more complicated.

Packing lunch brought an unexpected challenge: getting food and carbohydrate information to the people supporting her. Our solution was sticky notes on her lunchbox.

I wondered how other families managed it, so I reached out to the Type 1 diabetes community. Many described their own version of the same thing, notes, books or zip-lock bags with the day’s food written on them.

Charlotte also wanted more independence. She didn’t want to miss time with her friends at lunch and recess while visiting the nurse for her mealtime insulin.

Those experiences inspired My Lunch Buddy: a way to organise packed lunches, share planned VS eaten information and help children participate in their routines with adult support.
